portsmouth high school mural: "opening doors"

The Portsmouth Peace Treaty Forum assisted the Portsmouth High School Class of 2018 on research and images for the completion of a mural display highlighting the history and traditions of PHS going back to its founding in 1827. There are four panels in the “Portsmouth High School: Opening Doors” mural in addition to “Elizabeth Virgil: Overcoming Adversity.” They include sections on Portsmouth’s first school, Outstanding Alumni, the Haven Medal and the Sister School friendship with Nichinan, Japan. In addition, the Class and School Committee agreed to rename the Portsmouth High School Little Theater, "Nichinan Theater."
Starting in 2017, students from the PHS Honors American Studies classes alongside dedicated seniors from Student Council conducted ground-breaking research to reach their goal. Funding of $10,000 came from Piscataqua Savings Bank, the Class of 1968 generously pledged $5,000 as part of their 50-year reunion celebration and the students themselves raised another $4,000.
Portsmouth High School's Sister School, Nichinan Gakeun Jr-Sr High School provided an image of Obi Town, the historic center of Nichinan and artifacts for display in the re-named Nichinan Theater, opposite the mural in the main hallway of the school.
